Sommersemester 2002

Exercise 1 : Application Objects

Welcome to Unix! Both groups will be using Linux, so it's time to brush up on those UNIX commands, they will come in handy this semester.

We are going to start with some exercises to get us back into shape with Java. The exercise for today is "Building an Application: Part 1: Application Objects" by Dana Nourie. This is one of the Java Tutorials that we will be doing this semester.

  1. Read through the entire tutorial, and take the little quizzes that pop up. Do the little exercises as they appear in the text. Take notes on what you do - does it work right the first time? Your goal is to get the DiverLog GUI up and running. There is a troubleshooting guide at the end of the tutorial, and an example of the final code. But take this a step at a time so that you are back to thinking in Java!
  2. Bored? Already know how to program in Java? You can either do the Java Server Pages tutorial, or see me to choose another one that we will not be doing this semester.

The URL to your report, which will describe what you did during the exercise and include links to your code, is due in my email box by the start of exercise 2. The index page to this course web site describes what a report looks like. This means Tuesday at 8.00 for Group 1 and Thursday at 12.00 for Group 2. Do not forget to put your names on the report! When you send the URL to me, include your partner in the CC. That way I don't get either 2 emails or none, while each thought the other was doing it. And when I answer you, I can immediately answer both of you without having to look up your preferred email account.
