Didaktics of Media

General information

Welcome to the Web Technology focus of the Master's program in International Media and Computing! Since E-Learning and Edutainment are such a large part of media that are produced today, we will be looking at various aspects of web-based teaching.

This course is very different from courses you have taken in your Bachelor's program. I don't stand up and tell you what to think, we don't just read a book together and discuss it. Here we will be investigating various topics in the area of didaktics (I will explain my spelling the first week) and you will be called on to lead a session and to look for information yourself. I want to prepare you for your Master's Thesis, which will be much more of an individual research thesis than your Bachelor's thesis was.

We will be using a collaboration room in Moodle for parts of this course. You need to create an account if you do not already have an HTW Moodle account. The secret password is "TeachLearn".

The course meets on Tuesdays 17.15-18.45 in Oberschöneweide in Lab C 578L. Since we only have 7 registrations, there is only one exercise group. Update: Suddenly there are 11 registrations, so I will have to change something. And we meet in C 406 on Oct. 6, 2009, because the labs are closed.

Grades

The following activites will contribute to your grade

The exam will be taken in Moodle. As one of your tasks you will be required to design questions on the lecture material and enter them into the Moodle system. I will include many of my own questions, and then Moodle will choose a selection of the questions submitted for the exam. Every student will have a different exam, so it will not help to sit next to each other and take the exam! The exam will be taken on-line on or about February 9, 2010.

The number of points earned will result in a final grade according to the grading scale. You will note that the points listed above add up to 105 points. 95 are sufficient for a 1,0 in this course.

Leading a session

The second week of class you will choose a topic from the list. You will be the leader of this 45-minute session. Prepare a handout with some key points on the topic and some literature tips - online and offline material! The handout can be on paper or submitted online as PDF. You are in charge of leading the discussion on this - that means that you will have to find literature, sort through it, and find a way to present it. Note that there are some topics that people like to fight about - we want to hear all sides of the story!

Leave 5 minutes at the end of each session for feedback - we will do a quick circle with everyone giving honest feedback on the presentation that we just had. I also want to have feedback from you for the sessions that I lead.

Personal Learning Environment

During the semester you will be developing your own personal learning environment. I suggest you start with Netvibes, but work on from there. At the end of the semester I want to have a written description of the personal learning environment that you are now using, with an evaluation of the tools that you are using.

Communication

I am generally only available by email (but tend to answer at all hours of the day or night). You can reach my at weberwu@htw-berlin.de - and do not hesitate to do so if you have a personal question. My office is in C 645, but really, besides office hours I am seldom there.

There is a forum in Moodle called "News" - this is for announcements to the entire group and I force everyone to be subscribed to this. There is also a forum "Questions" - please address questions (and answers!) about this course to this forum only, as we have people from different semesters taking the course.

I expect you to set up a Twitter account and use #wt3 for tweets on the topic of eLearning.

My social bookmarking is done on delicious, there are various tags there that you may find useful.
