Exercise 1 : Java Review - Application Objects

You may boot your computer either to Unix or Windows, both operating systems hav a copy of the JBuilder. We suggest using JBuilder to do your exercises, even if setting up projects is a pain in the neck. You may, however, use emacs and JDK or whatever else works for you.

We are going to start with some exercises to get us back into shape with Java. The exercise for today is "Building an Application: Part 1: Application Objects" by Dana Nourie. This is one of the Java Tutorials that we will be doing this semester.

  1. Read through the entire tutorial, and take the little quizzes that pop up. Note down your answers in your report. If you are convinced that the automatic answer is wrong, note this down as well. Do the little exercises as they appear in the text. Take notes on what you do - does it work right the first time? Your goal is to get the DiverLog GUI up and running. There is a troubleshooting guide at the end of the tutorial, and an example of the final code. But take this a step at a time so that you are back to thinking in Java! No functionality is required yet, just the GUI!
  2. Bored? Already know how to program in Java? You can either do the Java sendmail tutorial, or see me to choose another one that we will not be doing this semester.

The URL to your report, which will describe what you did during the exercise and include links to your code, is due in email box of your instructor by 8.00 next Wednesday. Do not forget to put your names on the top of the report! It is also a good idea put the number of the exercise somewhere in the title of your report.... When you send the URL of the report to your instructor, always include your partner in the CC. That way we don't get either 2 emails or none, because each or your thought the other was sending it. This has the added advantage that when we answer you, we can immediately answer both of you without having to look up the email account of your partner.
